Probably no other town in Germany can boast such a favourable location. On 10 September 1928, the newspaper Hochwächter praised the new war memorial on the Neustädter Fullberg, which had been inaugurated the day before.
The monument is 15.5 metres high and the arms of the cross are each 1 metre long.
Even then, the memorial was clad in copper on the weather side to protect it from the elements. As there were problems with the lightning conductor, a 190 metre long earth cable was laid to the present hostel, where an earth plate was sunk in a marshy area.
