Gutenkapelle Schönwald

Beschreibung
Owned by Veronica and Klaus Hummel, built in 1954
The builder Engelbert Hummel (* 15.10.1903 + 31.05.1978), an uncle of the current farm owner Klaus Hummel, made a vow before the Second World War that if his family and his home village were spared, he would build a chapel.
The Grüninger bell foundry in Villingen cast the white bronze bell with the inscription "HL WENDELIN BITTE FÜR UNS" (St Wendelin PLEASE FOR US) in 1950, which was paid for by the nephews and nieces. This was originally intended to be placed in the courtyard (rebuilt after a fire in 1926). Engelbert Hummel then kept his promise 4 years later and built a chapel above the farm.
Engelbert Hummel was a tailor by trade, so anyone who helped him with the construction or donated materials was given a suit in return. This meant that the chapel could be built very cheaply. His nephew Otto Hummel (*22.04.1934) actively supported him. After a short construction period, the chapel was consecrated on 15 August 1954 on the Feast of the Assumption.
The Madonna and the Stations of the Cross were carved by Mr Rieber from Furtwangen. The altar and the door were made by the Thoma joinery in Rohrbach. Between 1995 and 1996, the interior of the chapel was renovated by Otto and his son Klaus (*27 May 1962). In 1998 the bell was also electrified and since then has rung at 7am, 12pm and 7pm.
In 2004, the outside of the chapel was repainted and this time the fourth generation was already actively involved. Weddings and baptisms have already taken place in the chapel. And once a year, on the Sunday before or after the Assumption of Mary (15th August), a mass is held.
