Katholische Kirche St. Nikolaus
The parish church of St Nicholas - a fascinating symbiosis of old and new - has existed in its current form since 1980.
Beschreibung
The nave of the old church was demolished in 1979 because it had become too small due to the growing spa business. The characteristic onion dome with three art-historically significant bells from the 17th/18th century remained.
The parish church of St. Nikolaus, built between 1253 and 1275, which has existed in its current form since 1980, is the architectural centre of the municipality of Schluchsee. The nave with apse in the east and tower in the west, which had become too small, was demolished in 1979 and replaced by a church building in the shape of a heptagon. A new nave was added with a hipped shingle roof that extends almost to the ground. The characteristic onion dome with three art-historically significant bells from the 17th/18th century, which is a listed building, has been preserved.
Worth seeing:
A "children's round dance" adorns the outside of the portal. The children revolve around the crosier and mitre, symbols of St Nicholas, the patron saint of our parish.
Celebration altar - the corner pieces and the top of the altar table come from the altar of the old church. The side elements have been redesigned - bunches of grapes and ears of corn recall the mystery of the consecration of bread and wine in the Eucharist.
The winged altar is supported by heavenly beings hovering around the tabernacle. The altar is carved in wood and dates from 1896, showing from left to right: St Blasius, St Benedict (Schluchsee used to belong to the Benedictine monastery of St Blasien), the Annunciation of the angel to Mary, the birth of Jesus, St Conrad the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Freiburg, St Nicholas the patron saint of our church.
The stained glass windows of the old church were inserted transversely as a band of light. In the old church, the Trinity window was in the apse behind the high altar and is now visible next to the baptismal font.
The Stations of the Cross were created by the artist Helmut Lutz in Breisach. The Stations of the Cross, carved from lime wood, are integrated into spheres. The cross is made of iron and rotates clockwise. The spheres close, symbolising pain and death.
The church of St Nicholas is barrier-free.
