The cathedral, the largest domed church north of the Alps, was destroyed by a major fire in 1874. The outer dome was rebuilt using steel girders. Remarkable is the classicist architectural style, which was rebuilt by Martin Gerbert, probably the most famous prince abbot of St. Blasien, after the great fire.
