"Half of the Sun"
An award-winning novel by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, presented by Chris O'Reilly, at the Dom-Hotel St. Blasien
Veranstaltungsdetails
In Nigeria in the 1960s, the village boy Ugwu comes to Odgenigbo, a left-wing intellectual professor, as a houseboy, where he learns to read and write. When Odenigbo's new love Olanna leaves her privileged life in Lagos to live with him, the three of them quickly grow into a small family. Together, they and many others share the great hope of an independent Biafra, which is proclaimed in 1967 in eastern Nigeria, where the majority of the Igbo population lives. Just three years later, the country sinks into a bloody civil war that brutally tears Olanna, Kainene and their loved ones from their lives and erases everything that existed before. Chimamanda Adichie is regarded as a new author blessed with the gift of the old storytellers.
As always, there will be an opportunity for discussion with the speaker after the presentation.
