The hike takes you through the "Löffeltal" valley to "Hofgut Sternen", where you have the opportunity to stop for refreshments and to visit a glass-blowing shop. The route continues past the impressive Ravenna viaduct through the romantic Ravenna gorge back to Hinterzarten.

You start your tour at Hinterzarten train station. At the Hotel Schwarzwaldhof, turn right onto "Freiburger Straße" and follow the signposts towards "Löffeltal" and "Ravennaschlucht", or the red and white diamond. Walk down the "Löffeltalweg" to the left of the railroad line. Continue along the Rotbach stream in the sparse forest until you reach the Klopfsäge sawmill and enjoy the rays of sunshine shining through the treetops. A few minutes later, you reach the "Hochgangsäge" and continue along the Rotbach stream until you reach the exit of the Löffeltal valley at the B31 main road. Down here in the valley, you notice the noticeably warmer air on your skin. You use the pedestrian underpass to cross the B31 and then follow the yellow diamond on the Höllsteig trail until you arrive at the Hotel Hofgut Sternen, where even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent a night. Here you have the opportunity to visit the glass-blowing and rope-making workshops as well as the old customs house. The hotel reception also has the key to the St. Oswald Chapel - the oldest parish church in the region - which is also located in the Höllental valley. You can reach it from the Hofgut in just a few minutes by following the footpath that runs parallel to the B31 over the Ravenna and past the "Zollhäusle".
Back again, turn right behind the farm towards the Ravenna gorge and reach the Ravenna railroad viaduct, an impressive stone arch structure. You pass under the viaduct and hike uphill through the wild and romantic Ravenna Gorge. In the gorge, it becomes increasingly cooler and you breathe in the moist, spicy air of the forest. You follow the Ravenna upstream, walking past a small lake until you reach the "Großjockenmühle" mill. At the next crossroads with the signpost "Mittlere Ravenna", turn right and walk out of the gorge into the open countryside and enjoy the feeling of the sun on your skin. Turn right towards "Birklehof" and Hinterzarten and stay on the tarred path until you reach Birklehof. Here you turn left towards Löffeltal and Hinterzarten and cross under the B31 again. Follow the red and white diamond signs through the houses and then along the tracks back to Hinterzarten.
