Ölberg Chapel Furtwangen
The Mount of Olives Chapel is located behind the Catholic parish church of St Cyriak Furtwangen and was built in 1928.
Beschreibung
On Maundy Thursday 1991, the reconstructed chapel was consecrated by the late priest Josef Beha.
The Mount of Olives Chapel is by no means new, but has already stood in almost the same place behind the parish church: it was donated by Adolf Heim in 1928. The Mount of Olives scene was created by the Freiburg sculptor Dettlinger, who was one of the most important copyists of the turn of the century. His workshop even produced complete copies of large baroque altars. It can therefore also be assumed that the Mount of Olives was modelled on an old original. However, this original is not known.
When the church square and church were remodelled at the end of the 1960s, the chapel was removed. After 20 years, this Mount of Olives scene was retrieved and reinstalled in a new chapel in almost the same place.
Numerous craftsmen and companies from Furtwangen were involved in the construction of the chapel, mostly the offspring of long-established businesses, and some of the work was even carried out free of charge or at a particularly favourable price. In addition to the Hermann company, Michael Gruber was involved with the painting work, the Schuler company with the roof, the junior of the Pfrengle smithy and Johannes Renner, and they all gave their best to make the Mount of Olives a real gem.
