Rococo library in the former Benedictine abbey
The library of the former Benedictine abbey, initiated by Abbot Ulrich Bürgi, was only completed 13 years after his death by Abbot Philipp Jakob Steyrer according to plans by the Vorarlberg master builder Peter Thumb (1752).It is in the Rococo style and largely characterized by works by the monastery sculptors Christian Wenzinger and Matthias Faller, who lived and worked in St. Peter for 10 years. The magnificent ceiling paintings are by Benedikt Gambs. The allegorical figures in the gallery - representing the various areas of knowledge - are works by Matthias Faller based on models by Christian Wenzinger. Of the original 12 figures, 6 are still preserved.Â
