The chapel is dedicated to the apostle princes Peter and Paul. Peter was one of the first disciples called by Jesus. He takes on a prominent role in the Gospels. He is depicted with a key (see Matthew 16:19 “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven”). He is seen as the rock upon which the church was built. According to tradition he was executed together with Paul during the persecution of the Christians under Emperor Nero.
Saul, the persecutor of Christians, became the Apostle Paul after he encountered the risen Jesus before Damascus. His various missionary journeys led to an expansion of the young church across the whole of the Roman Empire. The Apostle of the Gentiles is depicted with a book and a sword, indicating the manner of his death.
The size of the chapel infers that Seewangen once had a lot more inhabitants. Little is known about the origin and age of the chapel. The interior and exterior were completely renovated in 1987 after the building was threatened by collapse.
The feast day of this chapel is on 29 June.
